About Advanced Micro Devices

Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (AMD) is one of the oldest companies from Silicon Valley,
California, USA. It was established in 1969, right after the set-up of its current rival Intel. The founders of AMD were ex-employees of Fairchild conductor, the company where founders of Intel also gained expertise in the semiconductor science and trade as employees before launching Intel. Hence, both the arch-rivals have similar origins. AMD manufactures and sells all kinds for microprocessors necessary for computation such as CPUs, GPUs, APUs, SoCs and chipsets. Only Intel and AMD rein the segment of microprocessor market for computers and laptops. AMD has always been a second option to Intel, due to its competitor's robust market outreach and best in class products but after 2017, the consumer demand has shifted towards the latest launches of AMD due to its technological advantage in launching the faster 7 nm Ryzen series CPU at an affordable cost to the customers. The company has always been driven by technology and its products are developed at core in sync with latest computing requirements. Apart from processor and graphics business, AMD also provides server solutions to its clients and it is also plunging into the business of chipsets used in mobile handset. As of 2023, Advanced Micro Devices employees 25,000 people.

The USP or unique selling proposition of AMD lies in making apt microprocessors for gaming computers in an affordable price range. The vision of AMD states, "High Performance Computing is Transforming Our Lives".

Detailed SWOT Analysis of AMD

The detailed SWOT analysis for Advanced Micro Devices is presented below:

Strength

  1. Affordable leading player in an oligopoly market: AMD has been in the market of microprocessors for computers since its inception. The duos of Intel and AMD have been formidable competitors and always stayed ahead enough to bar any other players’ entry in this segment. Against every Intel processor, AMD has provided a comparatively more robust and formidable solution at a cheaper price. Although, the journey has been a roller coaster so far with ups and downs and Intel stays far ahead in the revenue race, but through innovation and affordability it has stayed in the leading position without any long-term entrant in the segment. Moreover, AMD has been competitive enough to diversify its portfolio into graphics solutions and server solutions. In all its competing segments AMD promises the offer of robust and affordable solutions. In CPU segment, Intel and in graphic cards, Nvidea, both are losing customer base while AMD is increasing market share.

  2. Gaining competitive edge through innovation: The hardware technology of computers has been subjected to up gradations right since its birth. It is one of the most dynamic fields. The computer processors are run by transistors as their core elements of computing functions. These transistors have decreased in size and increased in performance manifold times. They are known as nodes and measure in nanometre these days due to their extremely small size. Recently, in 2022 it has introduced Radeon RX 7900 series which combines 5nm & 6nm process nodes. Small size of nodes ensures better output efficiency in terms of performance and consumption of power and also improved designs. It has further expanded its product portfolio by introducing FPGAs and Adaptive SoCs utilized in data center and embedded markets and high-performance DPUs and next-generation data center solutions. Innovation gave a technical advantage to users of AMD. No longer is the company a poor man’s Intel. Advanced Micro has invested considerable research dollars into not only competing on price but on quality. For instance, they have challenged Nvidia on higher-end GPUs.

Detailed PESTLE Analysis of AMD

The detailed PESTLE analysis for Advanced Micro Devices is presented below:

POLITICAL

  1. Trade restrictions impact sales and development: AMD's joint ventures with Chinese entity THATIC have been impacted by the United States' trade policies. The addition of THATIC and the THATIC JV to the Entity List, along with ongoing uncertainties in U.S.-China trade relations, pose challenges for AMD's business. Restrictions imposed by the Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) prevent the shipping of certain integrated circuits to China and Russia without a license. The potential for trade disruptions, tariffs, and import/export regulations may negatively affect AMD's sales, reputation, and overall business. Additionally, export control restrictions could hinder timely execution of product roadmaps by AMD's research and development teams outside the United States.
