The French oil company Total reorganized its chemicals division in 2004, which led to the creation of Arkema, which debuted in May 2006 at the Paris Stock Exchange. The business operates in Asia, the US, Europe, Canada, and Mexico. Arkema announced in July 2022, that it had completed the purchase of Permoseal in South Africa.

1. One of the world leaders in surfactants: Arkema is a prominent international player with established expertise in the fields of surfactants, specialty polyols, and oilfield chemicals. Surfactants are used in household materials such as paints, detergents, and cosmetics. They are also used in industries for oil and gas extraction, removal of metal impurities, and coating agents for fertilizers. One of the top manufacturers of surfactants in the US, ArrMaz, was acquired by Arkema. This has strengthened the position of Arkema due to the geographical expansion. It has also gained a formulation expertise in surfactants that will be used in its manufacturing across the world. It is a leader in segments such as Lithium ore recovery, asphalt additives, and the fertilizer market. Further, the company plans to acquire the market in bio-based and biodegradable surfactants.

Opportunity
1. Increased use of EVs will spur demand for advanced chemicals: Stricter emissions in Europe have increased the demand for EVs. The battery electric vehicles and plugin hybrid electric vehicles markets in USA, Europe and China are driving the demand for battery solutions. These battery solutions will need the right materials in order to become a viable option. For instance, the lifetime of a battery and its compactness will be the deciding factors for growth in the market. Arkema has set its strategies in the right direction by acquiring stake in OXIS energy. Arkema supplies electrolyte salts from the fluorochemicals businesses, advanced polymers, and carbon nanotubes to OXIS energy. This is used in production of Lithium-Sulphur batteries. It ensures a key customer for Arkema and a guaranteed supplier to OXIS, in a highly competitive battery market. The integration has helped both companies to benefit from the economy of scope.
