1. One of the world leaders in maritime logistics with a fleet of 90 ships serving 150 ports: After 40+ years of functioning, Bahri or The National Shipping Company of Saudi Arabia is considered one of the biggest shipping and logistics companies worldwide. It has a fleet of 90 ships and operations in 150 ports worldwide. Bahri Oil transports 2.25 million barrels of oil daily and accounts for 6% of global energy transport volume. It undertakes 410 voyages a year. Bahri Chemicals is the largest owner and operator of chemical tankers in the Middle East with an operational fleet of approximately 1.3 DWT (Deadweight Tonnage). They are also one of the world’s largest owners and operators of Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCC) with a total capacity of over 13 million DWT. Bahri Logistics has operations in 610 locations spread across 102 countries. Therefore, it is a very large company with significant presence in oil, chemical, logistics and dry bulk transportation

Opportunity

1. Saudi Arabia poised to become an important part of the global mineral supply chain: Saudi Arabia is expected to play a very important role in the supply of minerals because of its reliable and lower cost energy, optimal geological location to serve different areas, welcome investment climate and aim to diversify its industries. It was suggested in the Future Minerals Panel held in Riyadh that Saudi Arabia could become a powerhouse producer for lithium, a mineral high in demand by global automakers. Owing to policies aimed at stepping away from Chinese products, Saudi Arabia is poised to increase investment in mineral production since demand is already present. In the same Future Minerals Forum, Bahri signed a memorandum of understanding with Saudi Arabian Mining Company (Ma’aden), one of the fastest-growing mining companies in the world and the largest multi-commodity mining and metals company in the Middle East. The two companies will explore deals such as transporting ammonia and other chemicals using Bahri’s cargo ships.

Political

1. Political unrest with Yemen is a maritime threat: Since 2015, war had ravaged between Yemen’s Houthi rebels and Saudi led Arab coalition. The UN has deemed it the worst humanitarian crisis in the world that had led to over 130,000 deaths. The situation remains unresolved and Saudi Arabia is often the target of air strikes and attack by Yemen rebels. The Houthis have also repeatedly attacked Saudi Arabia’s oil facilities. Yemen has a strategic position between Indian Ocean and the Red Sea, a very important route for international trade and one of the busiest maritime routes. In January 2022, the Houthi rebels seized a cargo vessel heading for Saudi’s port. Saudi Arabia’s oil transport faces risk now from Iran, which has declared support to Yemen. Bahri’s ships use these routes not only for oil shipping but other materials as well. Their functioning faces a threat in light of increasing disturbances in that area.
