About Bank of the Philippine Islands :

The Bank of the Philippine Islands was established in 1851 and is the country's and Southeast Asia's first bank. BPI is a universal bank that provides both retail and business customers with a wide range of financial products and solutions through its subsidiaries and affiliates. Services offered by BPI include consumer loan and banking, asset management, insurance, securities distribution and brokerage, foreign exchange, leasing, and corporate and investment banking. In addition, to close to 3,000 ATMs and cash deposit machines, the bank has a network of over 800 branches in the Philippines, Hong Kong, and Europe (CDMs). The Philippine banking and finance sector got its beginnings with the founding of BPI, formerly known as El Banco Espaol Filipino de Isabel II. The bank served a variety of purposes, including printing and issuing money and extending credit to the National Treasury, effectively making it the first Central Bank of the nation. This heritage is proudly continued by BPI, which provides funding for several projects and businesses in the public and private sectors that assist economic development and nation-building. In June 2022, the bank announced that it had signed a ground-breaking agreement with Alipay+ to let users of digital banking conduct international business. As a result, BPI is the first bank to work with Alipay+ as a mobile payment service provider to expand the reach of its payments service beyond small local businesses.

The unique selling proposition of BPI is that it is one of the most renowned banks in the Philippines and ranks second in terms of market capitalization and assets, making it the fourth-largest bank overall. The mission statement of the company reads, "to contribute to the financial well-being of its Clients and the progress of society as a whole".

1. Increasing number of cybercrimes such as phishing and ransomware in Philippines: The Banking and Financial Services Industry (BFSI) of the Philippines has rapidly modernized its products and services. Many banks, including traditional giants, offer digital services to its clients. But this has also exposed the banks and their clients to cyber-attacks. Lately, the BFSI of Philippines has been plagued by cybercrimes. The number of ransomware attacks have more than doubled in the three-year period from 2017 to 2020. In 2017, there were 1712 ransomware detected but that number increased to 4107. The number of prevented ransomware attacks increased from 5612 in 2017 to 44875 in 2020.

The most recent and infamous incident happened in late 2021 when Banco de Oro, the largest bank in Philippines by assets, became victim of the cybercrime. Many account holders in Banco de Oro lost money through unauthorized transactions carried out by the criminals. As Bank of the Philippine Islands itself has a customer base of atleast 5 million who use its apps, this kind of cyber-attack pose a large threat to it.

Promotion by BSP and necessitated by pandemic, rise in traditional bank providing more digital offerings and adopting fintech: BSP, the central bank of Philippines, and the government of Philippines both have been pushing for digitalisation of infrastructure and services across industries and throughout the country. This push for digitalisation was accelerated due to the pandemic and the ensuing lockdowns. BSP aims to have a digital heavy economy by 2023. It aims to have half of all the transactions that place in 2023 to be digital. It also aims that atleast 70% of all the people in the country must have a bank account by 2023. Banks have also adopted and are offering many of their services digitally. They, along with BSP, are conducting programs to raise digital awareness in the public.

The Bank of the Philippine Islands have also joined this trend and is offering many of its services and products digitally to its clients. Infact, the bank feels its clients are migrating to digital channels in such substantial numbers that it had started reducing its branch footprint, i.e., it is shutting down its branches. The bank will have to continue innovating more digital products and adopting new technology to stay competitive. But the bank has to be wary of cybercrimes also as it scales up its digital operations.
