Detailed SWOT Analysis of Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA)

Strength

Weakness

1. High dependence on off shore borrowings: Like other major banks of Australia, CBA relies on wholesale funding. Much of it is done through issuance of offshore debt. This leaves the bank at a risk, both market sentiment and cross currency volatility. Although CBA has tried to reduce this reliance after the meltdown of 2008, and has tried to reduce risk of cross currency volatility through issue of swaps, significant risks still exist.

2. Embroilment in money laundering scandal: Commonwealth Bank of Australia was embroiled in a deep money laundering scandal in 2017. The Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (Austrac) has lodged investigations and has accused the bank of being involved in more than 53,700 breaches of anti-money laundering and terrorism financing regulations. The bank’s intelligent deposit machines have been manipulated to carry off the above breach. This incident is a major embarrassment for the bank and puts its reputation and risk measures at stake. The bank has also canceled bonuses for senior executives as a part of the response measures.

3. Limited geographical diversity: CBA has primarily focused its operations in Australia and New Zealand along with China, Indonesia and Vietnam. Absence of the bank from European and American markets is a major weakness area for Commonwealth Bank of Australia. This is making the bank lose out on a lot of potential business opportunities and has also made is susceptible to volatility and slow down of the Asia-Pacific economy.

4. Increasing operating expenses: Over the past year, even though the bank has shown strong and robust financial performance, one cause of worry is the increasing operating expenses. During FY18, operating expenses increased by 9.2% to $11,599 million. Much of this high operating cost has been attributed to due to the AUSTRAC civil penalty and one-off regulatory costs. Other major components include increased personnel cost, occupancy and equipment expenses and technology expenditure. Though technology and personnel costs are not areas of concern, the bank needs to take care of volatile currency fluctuations through hedges.
