Opportunity

1. Leverage opportunities in the growing hydrogen power sector: The use of hydrogen is extensively growing because it does not produce any pollutants or greenhouse gas. Many sectors such as transport, building and power generation are moving towards the use and generation of hydrogen. Extensive use of this gas can enable people to achieve a clean, secure and affordable energy future. EDF clinched its first business contract in the hydrogen sector in 2020 through its subsidiary Hynamics. The French energy solution provider, will develop a green electrolysis production and distribution facility in France to supply energy to the bus and urban transport network. The company was also awarded a 30MW electrolyser project in Germany.

2. Grow services in the electric vehicle support segment: Electric cars are quickly becoming an integral part of the automobile industry and with that the market for EV charging is also rapidly accelerating. By the end of 2020, more than one million electric vehicles were sold in the United States alone. According to policy shifts and trends in the automobile industry, by 2040 more than half of the new cars sold will be EVs. EV charging systems and installations are still financially burdensome and lengthy so not a lot of companies have ventured into that sector. However, EDF Renewables has strong roots in the renewable energy sector, and they have ample funds available to establish market dominance in the rapidly growing EV charging sector. EDF has already developed the PowerFlex Systems using proprietary technology. The PowerFlex Systems uses software algorithm to optimize power consumption across a wide network of charging stations. This optimization will enable businesses to save more than 60% of the total electricity consumption compared to what would be required in a traditional system. The PowerFlex hardware is also easy and cost-effective to install, enabling businesses to install 3-4 times the number of charging stations at the same cost. EDF is planning to install charging points at campuses, workplaces, etc. to ensure maximum accessibility. In 2021, PowerFlex was consolidated with EnterSolar, a leading solar energy provider, to expand its offerings.

Legal

1. Incoming ban of ICE vehicles: ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) vehicles, also known as fossil fuel vehicles are one of the biggest contributors of greenhouse gas emissions. This is the cardinal reason behind several national and state governments around the world, banning them and setting time frames for the phasing out of these vehicles. The ACT regulation passed in California requires manufacturers to sell zero-emission trucks as a major part of their sales from 2024 to 2035. In the Netherlands, according to a diktat by the government, 50% of all new public buses have to be zero-emission by 2025. Other European countries like Denmark, Iceland, Ireland and Sweden have pledged to end the sale of new ICE vehicles in less than 10 years. Spain has drafted a law that will allow only the sale of zero-emission vehicles from 2040. These commitments will help countries reach their zero emission targets and will also help the renewable energy sector gather momentum and expand even further.
