Threat

  1. Impact of international trade relations on cargo transport: It is difficult to find accurate pattern between international trade and international freight transport as there are various interconnected factors which impact the latter. Access to international markets, trade policies and agreements, taxes involved, customs administrative fees and border costs are some of those. Moreover, situations like US-China trade war and Brexit have a considerable impact on global economic policies and trade relations. US-China trade war has affected the trade between both the countries negatively. There were escalations in tariff prices leading to rise in prices and thus, reduction in demand. This resulted in sharp decline in freight transport across the borders and Eva Air being a Taiwan based airline will continue to be impacted by this.

The detailed PESTLE analysis for EVA Airways Corporation is presented below:

POLITICAL

  1. Trade restrictions between Taiwan and Mainland China: Political tensions between China and Taiwan are deep rooted and critically impact their relationship with each other. China considers Taiwan as one of its provinces, where as the latter claims to be a sovereign state. Thus, there are various restrictions on transport and trade between the countries. This impacts the number and frequency of relevant passengers as well as cargo flights of Eva Air. Further, China being a much more powerful nation than Taiwan, some countries like Korea are a bit hesitant to sign open skies agreement with Taiwan in order to avoid making relations with China acrimonious. Growing the airline in Taiwan may result in losing out on Chinese traffic rights and airport slots.
