Detailed SWOT Analysis of Kyocera Corporation

Strength

1. Strong foothold in the energy business: Kyocera has travelled a long way from “selling goods” to “selling services”, and developing a strong foothold in the energy business over the years. The business model adopted by the company reduces the impacts of the initial investment pressure on users and power service providers, who leverage Kyocera’s exceptional credibility to develop their own long-term businesses. To make this possible, for residential uses, the company has cooperated with several electric power companies to provide clean energy using the solar panels and grid electricity supply. For the industrial usage, that is for the corporate users, Kyocera has established Kyocera EPA LLC as the leasing scheme for solar power generation systems. Furthermore, the company is involved in the introduction of new products to the energy self-consumption markets with an eye on increasing sales to boost sales by expanding product line-ups.

2. Aggressive approach to mergers and acquisitions resulting in combined competencies: Kyocera has always maintained an aggressive approach towards the mergers and acquisitions activities. The company has divided its structure into four groups, namely Industrial & Automotive Components Group, Electronic Devices Group, Document Solutions Group and Life & Environment Group. After bifurcating the Industrial & Automotive Group into two further parts, fine ceramic parts and industrial tools, Kyocera has strengthened production system and product line-up in the former and expanded the business field in the latter over the years. For the 5G base stations, the company planned to enter into a joint venture with Ube Industries in the late 2019s. As for the Electronics Devices Group, Kyocera has expanded its business into telecom and auto-related markets. For the rest two groups, the firm has acted on its plans to create comprehensive services and expand medical device business in the US.
