1. Technological Intervention in the financial services sector: There has been a lot of speculation around the use of technology in the Financial Sector. Banks and Financial Institutions usually are averse to using technology because there is a lot of risk and privacy involved. But with massive amount of data being created daily and consumers seeking real time information, banks have started feeling the need of it. Technology makes work faster and more convenient to both parties. Customers can access data, apply and submit forms, check transactions and avail new different product and schemes. It allows the institutions to provide details faster and also keep a check on the customer activities to detect malpractices and suspects, if any. Old mutual has great opportunity to use technology to retain its customers, identify risky accounts, trace market activities and make quick decisions. Digitization at Old Mutual has been done through launching of service portals such as My Old Mutual and mobile apps such as Dream enabler. Product 22seven is able to link to more than 1800 crypto currencies. Swiftcare is an emergency mobile app which provides access to numerous digital products and enriches customer experience through real time information flow. Still, opportunities lie aplenty in this aspect. Customers may open accounts, check their credit score and avail loans and mutual funds services straight for their home. BFSI are working in this direction already.

2. Expansion into sub-Saharan and developed markets: It seems strange that a company with a legacy of close to two centuries operates in 17 countries only. May be their business model is too concentrated to the African market. They have good chance to expand and stand against the multinational players. But before doing that, they need to serve the entire Africa first. Their business hovers in the Southern African region- South Africa, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Namibia, Zambia and Angola among others. They should look to harness the other sub-Saharan countries as well. But what will be important for OML is to operate in the more stable advanced economies. If they manage to serve the US and European market well, the stable financial and economic conditions will not only ensure profits but also minimize the risk possessed courtesy the African economy. One of the market’s largest opportunities comes in the presence of Africa’s low insurance penetration. As the economy rebounds, insurance companies have increased efforts to broaden their product offering and widen distribution. Technology is expected to provide new avenues for innovation and help the company expand across geographies.

3. Customer acquisition through online channels: Financial Services Companies can advertise their products as well and render services such as consultation online. Customers need not have to go to banks to seek information and guidance. Banks could actually sell products online and that is where the sector is heading for. Old Mutual has made online strides to enrich customer experience and become a digital business in the long term. They have launched a single self-service portal called My Old Mutual which gives customers access to 34 digital products offered by the bank. These include life insurance products. Other services include Dream Enabler, which is a mobile sales and servicing application with a single platform view of all customer products. Existing customers are being treated online and digital marketing may well help in acquiring new customers.
