Schnitzer Steel Industries, Inc., based in Portland, Oregon, is a steel manufacturer and scrap metal recycler. It was founded in 1906 and collects, processes, and recycles ferrous and nonferrous scrap metal. The company has 95 recycling facilities around the world, including seven deep water ports on both coasts of the United States, as well as in Hawaii and Puerto Rico, that allow for efficient delivery of processed waste metals to steel mills and foundries. Customers in the United States and Canada benefit from the company's used car parts stores, which offer low-cost, high-quality parts. Its steel production facility turns scrap metal into high-quality steel products like reinforcing bar (rebar), wire rod, coiled bar, merchant bar, and other speciality items. The global market for recycled metal has been expanding due to breakthroughs in processing technologies and major environmental benefits, and this is a key driver of the company. Scrap metal is collected in North America, processed for reuse, and sold to steel mills and foundries around the world. In August 2021, the Company announced that it has reached a deal to acquire Columbus Recycling's assets in the Southeast United States.

Strength
1. One of North America’s largest recyclers of scrap metal: Schnitzer Steel is one of North America’s largest recyclers of scrap metal (both ferrous and non-ferrous). The scrap metal is purchased from USA, Canada, Hawaii, Alaska, Puerto Rico and other regions from industrial manufactures and auto recycling facilities. Schnitzer Steel has facilities located in 23 states. The scrap metal is then shredded in efficient metal shredding systems and the recycled metal is sold to customers at home and abroad in over 29 countries. Schnitzer Steel uses state-of-the-art metal shredding systems. Their Mega-Shredders can recycle a greater range of materials and have advanced technologies in place to quickly recycle larger quantities with lower energy. Schnitzer Streel also has good market presence and port access making their business competitively advantageous. They also have strategic joint-ventures with big companies like railroads and construction projects to give them access to more raw material.

Weakness
1. Issues with environment compliance: Schnitzer Steel has been involved in several legal proceedings due to alleged environmental negligence. Steel manufacturing is an energy intensive process and newer and stricter law about GHG emissions have placed pressure on companies like Schnitzer Steel. In 2018, the company was found to have violated EPA’s environment requirements in the Pacific Northwest regions due to refringent recovery mismanagement in their facilities. In 2019, Schnitzer Steel received complaints from the District Attorney of California regarding alleged mishandling of hazardous chemicals and disposal of harmful water pollutants into waterbodies within California. In 2017, New England Metal recycling a wholly owned subsidiary of Schnitzer Steel was given notice for failure to comply with environmental regulations and undertake corrective measures. In 2020, the Portland Harbor cleanup plan was finalized, and EPA settled an agreement with 12 parties to develop a detailed plan for the cleanup. The Portland Harbor had been a dumping ground for large manufacturers like Schnitzer Steel and the river sediments, surface water and fish in the harbor have high levels of toxic chemicals like PAH, dioxins, DDT. As of 2020, Schnitzer Steel’s environmental liabilities with regard to the Portland Harbor cleanup is $4 million.
