Singtel (Singapore Telecommunications Limited) is the largest mobile network operator in Singapore. Owned by Temasek Holdings, SingTel has played an important part in the development of the country as a major communications hub in the South East Asia region. Singtel has also made major investments outside Singapore, with a 100% ownership in Optus, second largest Australian telecom and 39.5% stake in Bharti Airtel, India’s largest telecommunications company.

(7.78%), Central Provident Fund Board (5.24%), HSBC (Singapore) 4.05% etc.

1. Next generation mobile network: As more and more customers are switching to 4G and LTE networks from 3G, SingTel has been sole and foremost provider of these advanced technologies in many countries with the help of its regional associates. Singtel in 2017 launched fastest mobile network with 450 Mbps mobile data speeds nationwidein Singapore.

2. Strong performance in enterprise business: Singtel reported a strong performance in the growing enterprise business segment in FY17. Demand for ICT services, particularly cyber security, remained resilient which contributed to the divisions’ growth. As cybersecurity continued to emerge as a major business concern, Singtel’s cyber security arm Trustwave consolidated its position in the market. The telecofurther strengthened itsenterprise business capabilities by the launch of a new advanced security operations centre in Sydney as well as the NUS-Singtel Cyber Security R&D Lab inSingapore to innovate new IP and technologies.

3. Regional associates: SingTel’s regional mobile associates remain the leading mobile operators in Thailand (AIS), India (Airtel) and Indonesia (Telkomsel), and number two in the Philippines (Globe). Through Airtel, it also has presence in 17 African countries. It is also the owner of Optus, the second largest Australian telecom player with 100% stake.

1. Regulatory changes: Due to lower mandated termination charges, SingTel has been losing revenue from Optus (a fully owned subsidiary of SingTel in Australia). In India, TRAI is contemplating to reduce interconnection fees which will be a disadvantage to Airtel.

2. Competitive pressure across markets: Telstra in Australia is giving Optus tough competition in 4G roll outs and also several new entrants in the segment are certainly going to prove challenging to SingTel. In the Indian markets, Reliance JIO has disrupted the telecom industry with a price war strategy which has impacted incumbent players such as Bharti Airtel.
