About Textron Aviation Inc. :
Textron Aviation Inc., based in Wichita, Kansas, is the conglomerate Textron's general aviation business unit, which was founded in March 2014 with the acquisition of Beech Holdings, which included the Beechcraft and Hawker Aircraft businesses. The Cessna, which is owned by Textron, is part of the new business unit. Bell, Textron Aviation, Industrial, Textron Systems, and Finance are among the company's five segments. Hundreds of items are produced for customers all around the world in industries such as aerospace and defense, speciality vehicles, lawn care, and fuel systems by the companies. The business is always investing in next-generation products and services to stay competitive. Textron has a global production, sales, and service network that spans more than 25 countries. The company announced on 11 January 2022, that SECO International has signed a purchase agreement for a Bell 505 helicopter and has been appointed as the first Japan dealer for the Bell 505.

1. Defense segment holds multiple US Army contracts : In 2020, 30% of Textron’s total revenues came from delivering defense projects for the US Army. Although the aviation industry faced problems arising from the pandemic, Textron’s high investments in advanced defense technology helped them complete multiple projects and also win contracts for new projects. Textron Bell’s Future Vertical Lift program was implemented in the Bell V-280 Valor and Bell 360 Invictus Models, and they were selected for the Army’s FLRAA and FARA programs. In 2020, Textron Bell won another contract from the Department of Defense to procure parts and improve the CV-22 aircraft that is currently being used by the Air Force. Bell has so far delivered 150 Bell AH-1Z helicopters to the Army. Textron Systems’ business won four contracts from the US Air Force’s Combat Division (CAF) and Contracted Air Support (CAS). Textron will use the fighter aircrafts to conduct live training for the Air Force. Textron has also won several defense contracts for 2021 as the US Army continues to show faith in their services and products.

1. Establish leadership position in hybrid fuels solutions: As the world is slowly evolving to shift away from fossil fuels and towards renewable energy, aircraft manufacturers like Textron will also have to make this shift to ensure that their business meets the new regulatory requirements. Textron has a strong focus on developing products with electric technology. To develop electric systems, inspiration was taken from the E-Z-GO Elite Series lithium powered golf carts. Textron has had success in this field through its Jacobsen Eclipse 360 Elite Riding green mover. This machine fully relies on electric power and has a zero-maintenance battery system. The Eclipse provides energy and cost-efficient performance with minimal sound. Textron’s industrial products division, Kautex is a world leader in hybrid fuel solutions. Kautex’s work with hybrid fuel technologies and hybrid-electric batteries has attracted attention from around the world and they won four contracts in 2020 with major OEMs to develop hybrid fuel systems.

1. Fluctuations in oil prices due to COVID-19: The COVID-19 pandemic blew another shock to oil prices. There was an unexpected supply shock coupled with a fall in demand for oil. The crude oil sector was already weak due to growing pressures of clean energy transition. In 2020, oil prices reached their 30-year low. While demand for oil is expected to rebound in 2021, it will take some time for it to reach pre-pandemic levels. As more and more advanced countries are shifting away from oil and fossil fuel, the demand for oil will probably peak in a few years and then steadily decline. A sustained low price level for oil will give the aviation industry some much-needed respite from the falling profits due to the pandemic. Lower fuel prices will lead to lower operational costs and the extra money can be invested in new projects. However, the extent to which this will help them sustain profits in the long run is questionable. Many companies hedge oil prices to protect them against major price fluctuations. If oil prices drop drastically, then the airlines that had hedged their prices will find themselves paying the higher hedge price instead of the lower market price. The aviation industry is so competitive that even small changes in variable costs like oil can lead to large shocks to a company’s balance sheet.
