Strength

1. One of the oldest and well known retail brands in Australia: Woolworths was founded in 1924 and it is the largest supermarket grocery chain owner in Australia and also has a significant presence in New Zealand. It has a strong branding and most of the young Australians have their first jobs at Woolworths and the brand is also affectionately known as Woolies.

2. Large number of Supermarkets and a huge market share: It has got quite a strong reach among the populace of Australia with 995 Supermarkets and 202,000 employees as of 2017. According to Roy Morgan Single Source in March 2017, Woolworths’ market share was 35.7% followed by Coles at 33.2%.

3. Broad range of products and services: Woolworths offers great many products to Australian population ranging from food products to liquor, petrol, and even insurance sector. Big W is another division of chain discount stores (currently 182 in number) owned by Woolworths.

4. Good amalgamation of online and brick and mortar based sales channel: Woolworths has expanded its ‘Click and Collect’ service to 202 stores as part of enhancing their online capabilities. Also with $1.2 billion worth sales, online purchase has shown increased growth of over 40%, according to the annual report.

5. Strong commitment to environment and sustainability: Various areas have been targeted ranging from reducing carbon footprint, water usage and sustainable packaging decisions. By adopting these sustainable practices, Woolworths aims to attain competitive edge over the other players, boost the shareholder value, increase the market share, and decrease the operative costs.
