Detailed PESTLE Analysis of Burger King

The detailed PESTLE analysis for Burger King is presented below:

POLITICAL

  1. Ukraine- Russia war is causing problems for the business: Ukraine- Russia war has been a matter of concern for the global economy since it started during the month of February in 2022. The war caused problems in various sectors of the global economy. These issues can be marked as supply chain issues, energy crisis, sanctions etc. Among these the major impact has been faced by the businesses that operate globally. With the imposition of sanction on Russia by major economies like US and Europe, the businesses of these countries have been withdrawing from Russia. While most of the businesses have stopped their operations in Russia, some have continued due to withdrawal constraints. Burger King operates around 800 outlets in Russia. However, the company has not been able to stop its operations in Russia as these outlets are operated through joint ventures. US government has banned the company from providing consultation services in Russia. This may lead to a low demand for the franchises of Burger King. This will impact the expansion plan of the company in Russia.

  2. China has withdrawn its zero covid policy: With a tremendous deal of uncertainty and perhaps a hint of hope for the future, China enters 2023. Leader Xi Jinping's hurried and unprepared departure from zero-Covid has caused confusion that is continuing into the new year. Chinese visitors are ready to once again travel around the world as its once-closed borders increasingly open. There was insufficient planning in place to cope with the unexpected easing of limitations, which caused a surge of cases and deaths. The weak healthcare system of the country is struggling to keep up; it is difficult to get cold and flu medications, hospitals are overcrowded, and physicians and nurses are under extreme time pressure. Since millions of individuals are anticipated to go back to their hometowns from large cities and spread the virus there, experts caution that the worst is yet to come. The first quarter of 2023 is predicted by analysts to see a 0.8% decline in China's GDP, followed by a second quarter recovery. During the coronavirus epidemic, China's ties with the West and many of its neighbours deteriorated. Both the absence of high-level face-to-face diplomacy and the ban on in-person interactions between policy advisers, corporate organisations, and the general public were detrimental. In a flurry of bilateral encounters at the G20 and APEC summits, Xi expressed his readiness to mend fences with the US and its allies. This political uncertainty surrounding China and rising cases, may have impacts on the businesses operating there, including Burger King.

ENVIRONMENTAL

  1. More and more businesses are moving towards adopting sustainable packaging: Sustainable packaging is a critical stepping stone to ensure sustainability across operations. By minimising its environmental impact, Burger King is dedicated to contributing to a more sustainable future. Forks, spoons, knives, straws, drink lids, Frypods®, Whopper® wrappers, and napkins are eight of the most frequently used guest-facing products for which it has started a green packaging pilot programme with the goal of developing scalable solutions. In that line, the company is working to expand its worldwide cooperation with Loop to decrease single-use packaging through the use of reusables, and they are hoping to add Paris and London to the list of target cities in addition to New York, Portland, and Tokyo. When buying their favourite Burger King® items like the Whopper® sandwich, soft drink, or coffee, more customers will have the choice to join the company in its efforts to minimise waste thanks to Burger King's reusable pilot programme. Burger King is also working with The Coca-Cola Company and Kraft Heinz to make these plans a reality since it recognises that sustainability necessitates collaboration throughout the supply chain. Together, they will contribute ideas, packaging know-how, and resources to these pilot projects by taking use of their combined scale and resources, helping to realise the full potential of the country in the future.
