Detailed PESTLE Analysis of Henry Schein

The detailed PESTLE analysis for Henry Schein Inc is presented below:

POLITICAL

  1. Uncertainty of the existence of Health Care Reform Law: A notable Medicare health care reform initiative, The Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act of 2015 ("MACRA"), which was signed into law on April 16, 2015, established a new payment framework that altered certain Medicare payments to "eligible clinicians," such as physicians, dentists, and other practitioners. Certain eligible clinicians are required to participate in Medicare through the Merit-Based Incentive Payment System ("MIPS") or Advanced Alternative Payment Models, which include both positive and negative payment adjustments that consider quality, promoting interoperability, cost, and improvement activities. Payment adjustments began January 1, 2019, based on data collected during the first MIPS performance year (2017). MACRA payment levels and standards are still evolving, but they reflect a fundamental shift in physician reimbursement that is expected to provide significant financial incentives for physicians to participate in risk contracts, as well as increased physician information technology and reporting requirements. The effects of MACRA implementation are unknown and will be determined by future regulatory activity as well as physician activity in the marketplace. New state-level payment and delivery system reform programmes, including those modelled after federal programmes, are increasingly being rolled out by Medicaid administrators and the private sector, potentially altering the market and affecting Henry Schein's business.

ENVIRONMENTAL

  1. Inducing environmental sustainability for customers in a SmartWay: The logistics is a major contributor of air pollution in the world. Logistics include transportation of goods to different places, which increases fuel consumption. Fuel consumption leads to air pollution. Pollution caused due to consumption includes, 50% of nitrogen oxides, 30% of volatile components and 20% particulate matters, which are harmful to environment and human health. By 2025, US shipments are expected to increase by 23.5% from 2015 levels. SmartWay is the program of United States Environment Protection Agency (EPA). It provides a medium to identify the optimal transportation solution for a particular freight; which would enhance the cost saving in logistics and control emission caused due to fuel consumption in logistics. Henry Schein is a partner of EPA in SmartWay as logistics is a vital component of its business and the company requires to transport numerous shipment of medical drugs, equipment and devices as per orders and inventory requirements. Apart from SmartWay, Henry Schein promotes environmental sustainability through LEED certification, recycling and more usage of green products.
