Weakness

  1. Heavy dependence on third party manufacturers and suppliers: Jacobs Engineering highly depends on third party subcontractors, manufacturers and suppliers to perform and provide equipment and materials for its projects. It is important for the company to hire qualified subcontractors, manufacturers and suppliers to successfully complete its project. If the company fails to find a qualified subcontractor or if the amount exceeds the estimated rates, it may not be able to deliver a satisfactory project and may also incur significant loss. If a subcontractor, supplier or manufacturer fails to provide its services on time, the company might need to hire new subcontractors which will result in the delay of work and may also impact contract profitability. The inability of the subcontractor to perform successfully directly impacts the company’s financial condition and reputation. Dependence on the U.S. government and its agencies for a significant proportion of revenue: The company relies significantly on the US government and its agencies for a plump proportion of its revenue and profits.

Threat

  1. Reduction in government spending may impact growth: Jacobs Engineering is subjected to various restrictions, regulations and audits by the U.S government or other government agencies which results in the delay of payments. Government contracts are also quite uncertain in terms of funding such as confiscation and budget shortfalls, as well as Congressional funding. If any of the U.S government or agencies with which the company works shuts down, it could result in the cancellation of the project as it would limit the government’s ability to make payments in a timely manner, restricting the company’s ability to successfully complete the work. Usually governments are not under any obligation to maintain funding, and funds for programs can even be eliminated. Such circumstances can impact the profitability and operation of the company.
