Threat

  1. Tariffs rates in the United States: Saputo’s operations in Canada are subject to its supply management system. This restricts dairy producers from producing levels which would match domestic consumption levels and also imposes high tariffs on imports. This was greatly lampooned by the Trump administration which in response increased tariffs on cheese to 25%. This prevented Saputo from trading freely with the country having a large impact on its sales. The only way to undo the harm done by these tariffs is through acquisitions in the US which would help establish a base there.

Detailed PESTLE Analysis of Saputo

The detailed PESTLE analysis for Saputo Inc. is presented below:

POLITICAL

  1. Lobbying.for.favorable.policies.in the US Congress: The key issues for Saputo are agriculture policy, dairy processing, healthy food and nutrition, trade issues and supply management. These factors and a few others have an immense impact on the company’s operations. Hence, having favorable policies, rules, etc. is crucial to them. The group has been lobbying against the tariff barriers in US, seeking exemptions wherever possible. Tariff barriers prevent further penetration of the US market and exporting from US through companies acquired also becomes expensive. The group is also lobbying against the categorization of some of its products as Genetically Modified Ingredients. They constantly receive flak from US farmers who hold the company responsible for marketing its non-GMO products and harming sustainable agricultural practices.
