Opportunity

1. Demand for life support equipment during Covid-19: The global ventilator market stood at $1,072 in 2018. It was forecasted to grow at a CAGR of 7.1% in the pre-covid scenario. It increased exponentially due to the advent of the Covid 19 pandemic. The growth rate has been 172% during the pandemic period. Even regulatory authorities such as FDA have given permission to use anesthesia gas machines, continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), and other sleep apnea devices as alternative ventilators to meet the demand. Other factors that are responsible for this rise in demand are rising cases of respiratory diseases, high frequency of premature births and critical care for increasing geriatric population. As a result, many non-healthcare firms also started production of ventilators. Getinge ramped up the production by 160%. Further expansion of capacity is necessary to harness the boom in this product segment.

2. Constantly high demand for sterilization equipment: Hospitals are facing operational and financial burden during Covid. The equipment such as surgical instruments, endoscopic instruments, respiratory devices, and reusable hemodialysis machines have seen large scale usage during the pandemic. The need for sterilizers has increased with the increased use of medical devices. The transmission of the corona virus within the hospitals can be prevented with appropriate sterilization. The increased number of surgeries have caused a rise in demand of sterilizers, in general. Without the use of proper sterilization, the Hospital-Acquired Infections (HAI) such as bloodstream infections, urinary tract infections and ventilators associated pneumonia will become common. Getinge is a Pioneer in sterilization equipment. The has recently launched a steam sterilizer named Solsus 66. It is an energy efficient sterilizer that utilizes minimum resources. This segment will be a key driver of growth for Getinge.

1. Nooze tightened around regulatory measures after the implementation of EU MDR implementation: EU had published the Medical Device Regulations (MDR) in 2017. These regulations came into full effect in 2021. MDR has replaced EU’s Medical Device Directive. The medical device manufacturers faced issues in complying to these regulations during Covid-19. This was because the clinical evidence requirements had become more stringent with new regulations. The supply chains of the medical device companies will be traced through latest technology advancements. There is very little clarity on regulations concerned with trade with other countries. The approvals for innovative products will take longer time, thus hindering innovation. But the new system also has many benefits such as improved patient safety and transparency of data. The increased barriers to entry will benefit established companies such as Getinge. However, the company needs to resolve its existing compliance issues at the manufacturing facilities.
