Weakness

1. Lack of presence in fast growing Asian countries except China: In purchasing power parity terms, Asia and the Pacific generated more than 40% of global Gross Domestic Product in 2014. Telefonica is not present in many of the Asian countries like India, Thailand, Malaysia, etc. Lack of presence in such emerging economies which can give huge revenue and market share is a weakness of Telefonica.

Opportunity

1. Internet connectivity becoming a necessity worldwide: About 48% of the world's population uses the Internet. In 2015, the International Telecommunication Union estimated that about 3.2 billion people i.e. almost half of the world's population, would be online towards the end of the year. Of them, about 2 billion would be from developing countries, including 89 million from least developed countries. This is an opportunity for Telefonica to reach to more and more customers through its internet and related services.

2. Expansion of business to emerging markets: Demand from emerging markets will help to attain growth and margins. Currently Telefonica doesn’t have significant presence in emerging markets such as Asia Pacific. Investment in these markets will create new opportunities to expand products from the developed world. Telecommunication services, mobile business, and value-added services, wireless data, Internet and other related services of Telefonica will all benefit from the increased demand in emerging countries.

3. Growth through inorganic means: Telefonica can grow through mergers and acquisitions with other companies which are into similar businesses. This will help in capturing markets at a faster rate. Telefonica can benefit from a greater pool of skills and experience obtained by inorganic growth. Customers, sales, assets and market position can be acquired immediately and this also helps in reducing competition.
