Strength

Weakness
1. Majorly dependent on the domestic Chinese market: Geely has been able to do wonders in the automobile market with its innovation, strong R&D, an unprecedented focus on Electric Vehicles, over 1400 patents associated with its name but all of it has been majorly in the domestic Chinese Market. The YoY sales growth for Geely in the international market has been strong but it is yet to establish a strong foothold in the international market. With a very minimal presence in the international market, Geely is very much dependent on the domestic market. This can be very contagious for Geely as any disruptions in the domestic market may have a direct impact on Geely as happened in the case of the economic slowdown of China. Talking about the sales figures for 2018, the domestic sales had been 98% as compared to meager 2% sales in the international market.
2. Lack of features as compared to Global players: Geely has been able to capture much of the thrust in the automobile industry with its innovation, focus on quality and design but if we compare it foreign brands, it still lacks behind in various aspects.
The foreign brands have very advanced technology like distinctive new design highlights, luxurious interiors, advanced cylinder-on-demand technology for improved efficiency and all-wheel drive system. Geely has been successful in recognizing the gap and took various steps in the direction like partnering with first-class automakers, learning the mature technology from foreign companies, acquiring some international famous automobile enterprises and auto part companies over the years but it still has a long way to go to compete and match the offerings by the global players.
3. More sales but less profit of Volvo cars: More sales do not necessarily imply more profit and the same is the case with the Volvo cars of Sweden which is owned by China's Zhejiang Geely Holding. Because of tariff wars and increasing competition, Volvo saw its profit margin slide even after selling more number of cars. In a total of 6,42,253 cars and SUVs were sold in 2018 which was an increase of 12.4% over the previous year but the profit margin fell from 6.7% to 5.6%. In order to grow further, Volvo has recently opened a new factory in the U.S and is also having a growing presence in China but it is at a disadvantage in the premium market as in this segment, it is still operating at a much smaller scale and needs to compete against companies like Mercedes, BMW, and Audi. Further, the credit history of Volvo is limited by its relatively short track record of operational improvement and its history of very low profitability margins. Not only this, Volvo had to recall 167,000 of its XC60 SUVs to fix a problem with its electric tailgate and 219,000 vehicles to fix possible fuel leaks which in turn additionally adds to its costs and adversely impacts the overall profit.
